Comparison

Annoto vs. H5P Interactive Video: Author One Video, or Add a Layer to All of Them

H5P is an open-source content framework. Its Interactive Video type lets an instructor build questions, hotspots and bookmarks into a single uploaded or YouTube-linked video, inside Moodle or, through h5p.com, over LTI in other systems.

Annoto is a video learning layer. It overlays the video you already host, on Panopto, Kaltura, YouTube, Vimeo or natively, and adds graded quizzes, timeline discussion, notes, video assignments and per-learner analytics across the whole library, with grades passing to the LMS.

Where your video lives

It stays where it is

H5P wants the file or a YouTube link inside its content item. Annoto runs on the player you already use; nothing is re-uploaded.

What students do

Answer, discuss, submit

H5P asks questions inside one video. Annoto adds questions, a threaded discussion anchored to the second, notes, peer review and video assignments.

What you get back

Evidence per learner

H5P reports a score per activity. Annoto reports attention, comprehension and participation for every learner, and syncs completion and grades to the LMS.

Where Each One Fits

An authoring tool for one video, or a layer on all of them

H5P is a framework of more than fifty content types; Interactive Video is one of them. Annoto does one job across every course video. The overlap is real but narrower than the category names suggest.

Switching or Adding

Keep H5P where it works, add Annoto where it does not

Institutions rarely rip H5P out. Branching scenarios, course presentations and drag-and-drop activities have no equivalent in Annoto and should stay. The question is what to do with the lecture library that nobody has time to author by hand.

1
Install alongside H5P

Your LMS admin registers Annoto over LTI 1.3. H5P activities are untouched.

2
Point it at the lecture videos

Annoto overlays the existing recordings in one course. Lumo drafts questions; the instructor approves them and seeds a discussion prompt.

3
Compare over one term

Judge it on completion, comprehension scores, discussion depth and the hours of authoring you did not spend.

FAQ

Annoto vs H5P, Answered

Is Annoto an H5P alternative?
For interactive video, yes. H5P Interactive Video builds interactions into one video at a time inside its own content item; Annoto overlays quizzes, discussion, notes and analytics on the video where it already lives, across the whole library, with per-learner analytics and LTI grade passback. For H5P's other content types, such as branching scenarios and course presentations, Annoto is not a replacement and the two coexist.
Is H5P free?
The H5P core is open source and free, and Moodle ships with it. h5p.com, the hosted service that connects to Canvas, Blackboard and Brightspace over LTI, is a paid subscription. The larger cost is authoring: every interactive video is built by hand, which is why most H5P libraries stay small.
Do H5P scores reach the gradebook?
In Moodle the H5P activity records a grade; on h5p.com scores pass over LTI. Annoto passes per-question, per-video or per-assignment scores to Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard and Brightspace through LTI 1.3 Assignment and Grade Services, and instructors choose whether completion, correctness or both count.
Does H5P have discussion inside the video?
No. H5P interactions are individual: a learner answers and moves on. Annoto adds a threaded discussion anchored to the moment in the video, with notifications and moderation, so a misunderstanding surfaced by a question can be resolved in the thread beside it.
Can we run both?
Yes, and it is the common pattern: H5P for scenario and presentation content that instructors author deliberately, Annoto for the lecture, seminar and demonstration video that would otherwise stay passive. They install separately and do not interfere with each other.
