Canvas Studio is not included in base Canvas. According to Instructure's own community guidance, it is a separate product that an institution licenses and then chooses to integrate with Canvas, and it is not available on the free Canvas for Teachers tier. Instructure does not publish a list price, so the honest answer to "what does it cost" is that it depends on your contract and, from 2026, on which Canvas tier you are on.
Canvas Studio is Instructure's video tool inside Canvas. This post sets out what is actually documented, how to find out what your institution has, and how the cost model compares with alternatives. Everything here is as of October 2026, and you should confirm with your Instructure account manager.
Studio is a separate product. An Instructure community thread on what Canvas Studio is and how to access it states that "Canvas Studio is a separate product, not a built in part of Canvas," that "it is not included on the Free for Teachers Canvas," and that "if your school licenses Canvas Studio, they can choose to integrate it with Canvas." That is the clearest published statement on inclusion.
Insights is a legacy add on folded into tiers. Instructure's guide to the Studio Insights page carries a note that the feature "is a legacy add on that is now available with Canvas Plus and Canvas Next." So analytics for Studio video has at some point been sold separately, and is now positioned inside the upper tiers.
Three Canvas tiers from 2026. Instructure's April 21, 2026 announcement, Instructure Introduces Simplified Canvas Tiers, describes Canvas Core (foundational LMS functionality and essential AI), Canvas Plus (adds engagement tools, analytics, Impact and IgniteAI teaching and feedback tools) and Canvas Next (everything in Plus, plus IgniteAI Agent). The release says existing customers keep their current agreements and functionality during their current term, with the tiers available to North American institutions later in 2026 and international rollout in phases.
Studio sits in Plus and Next. The release itself does not name Studio, but Instructure's Canvas tiers page lists interactive video capabilities with Studio as part of Canvas Plus and Canvas Next, and the What is Studio? guide now describes Studio itself, not only Insights, as a legacy add on that is available with those two tiers. In practice that leaves three situations: you hold Studio as an older standalone add on, you have it through Plus or Next, or you do not have it.
No list price. Instructure's Canvas Studio product page offers Get Canvas Studio and Book a demo, with no pricing. Third party sites publish estimates; none of them are Instructure figures and this post does not repeat them.

Many instructors have never seen a Studio invoice because the institution pays. Iowa State's Studio page, for example, says the tool is built into Canvas with no extra charge for ISU faculty or students. That is a campus licensing decision, not a statement about Instructure's price. The same is true of most video tools in higher education: the institution licenses, the instructor sees a menu item.
Before asking a vendor, ask three people on campus.
If your institution's current term predates the 2026 tiers, expect the Studio question to come up at renewal, since that is when existing agreements are revisited.
Three kinds of product answer the "video in Canvas" need, and they are priced differently.
Studio as an Instructure add on or tier. Bundled with the LMS relationship, one vendor, one invoice, and a feature set that is adequate for upload, simple quizzes and viewing analytics. The trade is that you are buying hosting and interaction together, and the interaction side has documented limits.
Hosting platforms (Panopto, Kaltura, YuJa). Typically licensed per institution with storage, capture and streaming as the core value, and quizzes and analytics as features of the host. Costs scale with storage and hours. If you already pay for one of these, Studio hosting may be a duplicate.
An engagement layer. Annoto is licensed by the institution, students never pay, and it runs on top of whatever host you already have, including Studio, Panopto, Kaltura and YouTube. The pricing page sets out the model. The point of the layer is that quizzes, discussion, attention analytics and gradebook passback do not require changing where video lives, so the cost conversation is about engagement rather than hosting.

If your institution already licenses Studio and the native quiz and Insights tab meet your needs, keep it; there is no cost to adding. If the gaps are editable quizzes, discussion tied to the timeline, per learner attention and comprehension data, or quizzes on Panopto, Kaltura and YouTube sources, the layer is the smaller purchase compared with moving to a different host. The Annoto vs Canvas Studio page compares the two, and the Canvas Studio alternatives guide covers the hosting platforms as well. For LMS admins weighing the integration, the IT admins page describes the single LTI 1.3 registration.
No. Instructure's community guidance describes it as a separate product that an institution licenses, and it is not available on Free for Teachers Canvas. It may be free to you because your institution pays.
Instructure does not publish a price, and figures on third party sites are estimates. As of October 2026 the cost depends on your institution's contract and, going forward, on the Canvas Core, Plus or Next tier. Ask your Instructure account manager.
Yes, according to Instructure. Its Canvas tiers page lists Studio's interactive video capabilities in Canvas Plus and Canvas Next, and the What is Studio? guide calls Studio a legacy add on now available with both. Institutions on an older contract may still hold Studio as a separate add on instead, so check which applies to you.
Not necessarily. Panopto and Kaltura host and stream video and offer their own quizzes and analytics inside Canvas. Many institutions run one host plus an engagement layer rather than two hosts.
Canvas Studio is a separately licensed Instructure product with no published price. It is now a legacy add on included with the Canvas Plus and Canvas Next tiers, and the 2026 tier structure means the question will surface at your next renewal. Find out what you already pay for before shopping, treat hosting and engagement as separate decisions, and compare the cost of a layer on your existing video against the cost of changing hosts. You can see the layer on one of your own course videos at annoto.net/demo.
