The main ways to add interactive video with graded questions to Moodle in 2026 are Moodle's own H5P activity with the Interactive Video content type, a community plugin from the Moodle plugins directory, the quiz tools inside Kaltura, Panopto and YuJa, dedicated tools such as PlayPosit and Edpuzzle, and Annoto, which adds quizzes and discussion on top of the video host you already use or hosts the video itself. Which one fits depends mostly on where your videos live today and how reliably you need scores to land in the Moodle gradebook.
Moodle's H5P activity adds H5P content from the content bank, or an uploaded H5P package, to a course, and the documentation notes the activity may be gradeable depending on the teacher's settings. Teachers create content in the content bank, where Interactive Video is one of the content types. Students and teachers get an Attempts report, though Moodle notes this report is not linked to the "Grade to pass" setting or to activity completion.
The Interactive Video content type on h5p.org supports multiple choice, free text, fill in the blanks, drag and drop and mark the words questions, plus summaries at the end, bookmarks and text or image popups. Answers can send a student back to the part of the video that explains the concept. H5P is a sensible default when you want something free that lives inside Moodle.
The Interactive Video activity module, maintained by Sokunthearith Makara, places annotations, decision points, H5P content, HTML, PDF and Office documents at moments in a video. The core plugin is released under GPL v3, and extra interaction types such as analytics, polls, forms and an interactive transcript are sold as one time purchases. It accepts uploads, HLS and DASH streams, and links from YouTube, Vimeo, Wistia, Panopto and other platforms. Completion can be based on the percentage of interactions completed. The listing focuses on completion and does not describe gradebook grading, so test grading on a staging site before relying on it.
If you already license one of these platforms, its quizzing is the easiest place to start.
Kaltura Video Quiz supports multiple choice, true or false, open ended questions and reflection points, with settings for skipping, hints and retakes. In Moodle, instructors build the quiz in My Media and then embed it as a Kaltura Video Quiz activity; scores are sent to the Moodle gradebook when students submit. Kaltura notes that grading uses points because the scale option is not supported, and that students should finish in one sitting so the session does not expire before the grade syncs. Its LTI 1.3 deployment guide requires Moodle 4.x and the Kaltura Video Package for Moodle v4.4.3 or later, with "Accept grades from the tool" set to Always.
Panopto's quizzing page describes knowledge checks placed at any timestamp, with playback pausing until learners respond, and says assessment results feed into the LMS gradebook. Its Moodle integration page recommends LTI 1.3 for cloud hosted Moodle, pairs it with a Moodle plugin and course block, and says video completion and engagement data can flow to the Moodle gradebook. Ask Panopto to demonstrate quiz passback on your Moodle version.
YuJa's in video quizzing supports multiple choice, true or false, short answer, multiple select, reflective pause and conditional response questions. YuJa says quiz scores sync to the gradebook in Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle and Brightspace through IMS certified LTI 1.3 and native integrations. On the Moodle side, YuJa offers a Media Chooser it describes as a native Moodle plugin, and its Moodle support section includes a guide to integrating video quizzes for gradebook sync.
PlayPosit, which WeVideo acquired in 2022, layers questions, hot spots and other interactions onto video. Its Moodle 4 guide adds a lesson, called a bulb, through the External Tool activity. Auto graded items sync at the end of the bulb, manually graded items need a Sync Grades click on the Monitor page, and bulbs added with an embed code do not sync grades. PlayPosit's LTI 1.3 install page lists Canvas, Schoology, Blackboard Ultra and D2L but not Moodle, and says LMS integrations are included for institutional licenses, so confirm which connection your Moodle site will use.
Edpuzzle's Moodle help article has an admin configure Edpuzzle as an external tool with a consumer key and shared secret, the older LTI 1.1 pattern, and turn on deep linking. Grades sync automatically as long as "Accept grades from the tool" is set to Always. Our Edpuzzle vs PlayPosit comparison covers the differences between the two.
Annoto installs in Moodle as an LTI 1.3 external tool that an admin registers once for the whole site, on self hosted Moodle or MoodleCloud. Questions are pinned to timestamps (multiple choice, multiple answer, true or false, fill in the blank and open ended), with graded or practice modes and an optional lock on fast forwarding. It works over video in Moodle, Kaltura, Panopto, YouTube, Vimeo, Wistia and self hosted streams, and Annoto can also host the video itself. Beyond quizzes it adds time stamped discussion, private notes, video assignments with peer review and per student analytics. Its AI assistant, Lumo, drafts questions for the instructor to review and publish.
A native tool is often enough. If a course needs a few checks on a handful of videos and you already use H5P, or your Kaltura or YuJa quizzing covers the need, another tool may not add much. Annoto makes more sense when courses mix video hosts, when you want discussion and peer review on the timeline, or when you want the same setup across several LMSs. The pricing page describes institution and department licenses and a free one semester pilot with no contract.
Most tools here send scores through LTI 1.3 grade services or through an older LTI 1.1 connection. A few checks apply to every option:
Our gradebook sync guide and LTI 1.3 procurement checklist go deeper on what to test.
Yes. The H5P activity and content bank include the Interactive Video content type, and Moodle's documentation says the activity may be gradeable depending on the teacher's settings.
Kaltura says scores go to the Moodle gradebook when students submit. Its LTI 1.3 setup needs Moodle 4.x and Kaltura Video Package v4.4.3 or later.
Yes. The Interactive Video plugin accepts YouTube links, and Annoto lists YouTube among the hosts it works over. Check each tool's notes on private or unlisted videos.
Kaltura documents an LTI 1.3 Moodle setup, Panopto recommends LTI 1.3 for cloud hosted Moodle, YuJa names LTI 1.3 for gradebook sync, and Annoto installs as an LTI 1.3 tool.
