Article cover

Panopto and YuJa are both full video platforms for universities that record lectures, host video, add in video quizzes and connect to the major LMSs, so the choice usually comes down to details: Panopto leans on search, analytics depth and accessibility tooling, while YuJa leans on its own capture hardware, a broad quiz toolkit and a flexible licensing approach that includes a published price match offer. This guide compares them as each vendor describes itself in 2026, then looks at adding a separate engagement layer to either one.

What is the main difference between Panopto and YuJa?

Both cover the same core jobs: classroom capture, a central video library, LMS embedding, captions and analytics. The differences show up at the edges. Panopto puts a lot of weight on Smart Search, which indexes spoken words, slides and on screen text, plus add ons such as Knowledge Insights and Access AI. YuJa puts weight on a wide capture portfolio, including its own rack mounted Hardware Hub appliances, and on a quiz suite with branching, decision point questions and optional proctoring.

If you are still defining requirements, our guide on how to choose lecture capture software covers the questions to settle before you compare vendors.

How do Panopto and YuJa handle lecture capture?

Panopto

Panopto says its lecture capture works with classroom AV systems so recordings can start, stop and publish automatically, with automated scheduling and live streaming for HyFlex classes. Faculty can trim and splice recordings in the browser and reuse them across sections and semesters. In its own comparison article, Panopto describes multi camera capture from desktop, browser and mobile apps, a remote recorder with bulk scheduling, and automatic slide indexes.

YuJa

YuJa lists several capture routes on its lecture capture portfolio: software capture on podium machines or laptops that can record multiple video, audio and screen sources at once, a Browser Capture Studio, mobile and tablet capture, and Hardware Hub appliances for classroom encoding. Smart room automation adds hands free scheduling, remote start and monitoring, and live streaming is part of the same portfolio.

Both handle scheduled classroom recording. YuJa offers its own appliance option; Panopto emphasizes integration with existing room AV.

How do Panopto and YuJa compare on hosting and deployment?

Both are cloud services. Panopto describes itself as cloud native on AWS and states encryption at rest and in transit. YuJa describes its Lumina Video Platform as cloud hosted, and its security and trust page lists SOC 2 Type II, GDPR, HECVAT and TX RAMP, with database replication across multiple data center zones. YuJa also highlights an umbrella architecture for running one instance across several campuses on its LMS integration page. Neither vendor page we reviewed advertises an on premises edition, so ask directly if that matters to you.

How do Panopto and YuJa handle video quizzes?

Panopto

Panopto lists in video quizzes as part of its lecture capture and active learning offering, and its analytics page says quiz scores and completion data flow into the gradebook for Canvas, Blackboard and D2L Brightspace, where grade passback is supported.

YuJa

YuJa publishes a detailed in video quizzing page: multiple choice, true or false, short answer, reflective pause, conditional response and multiple select questions, plus choose your own adventure paths, video branching, AI generated quizzes and optional proctoring through YuJa Verity. Scores sync to Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle and D2L Brightspace gradebooks.

On paper, YuJa documents more quiz formats publicly. For many courses, either native quiz tool is enough.

How do their analytics compare?

Panopto describes per viewer watch time and completion data, engagement heatmaps across a recording's timeline, cohort reporting and exports filtered by user, folder, course or date. Knowledge Insights is a separate analytics add on. YuJa's video analytics page says instructors and administrators can track individual student performance at course and institution level, with hot spot tracking for drop off and viewer data that can be turned into reports. Panopto's public material goes into more detail here; ask YuJa for a demo of its reports if analytics is a deciding factor. For a broader look at the question, see how to know if students watched the video.

How do Panopto and YuJa integrate with the LMS?

Both connect to the four major LMSs. Panopto says it integrates natively with Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle and D2L Brightspace through LTI embedding, with SSO. YuJa shows Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle and D2L on its LMS integration page, with embedded playback, role mapping, enrollment sync and SSO options including CAS, Shibboleth and LDAP. (New to the standard? Here is a short explainer on LTI 1.3.)

How do they handle captions and accessibility?

Panopto's accessibility page lists automatic captions, multilingual ASR in 20+ languages, translated caption tracks, human captioning through partners such as 3Play Media, Rev and Verbit, live captioning, audio description services and an accessible player, with an Accessibility Conformance Report available through its Trust Center. YuJa states that its automatic captions run at about 85 to 95 percent accuracy, and offers professional human captioning at 99 percent or better, with integrations for 3Play Media, AST CaptionSync, Verbit and Rev. YuJa also sells Panorama, a separate LMS accessibility platform.

How are Panopto and YuJa licensed?

Neither publishes prices. Panopto's pricing page says it is "Priced for your organization, not a tier," with quotes shaped by users, storage, integrations and support tier. YuJa's pricing page says each license is customized, mentions free trials and pilots, and offers to match the verified pricing of a major competitor with comparable capabilities. Before renewing either, our contract renewal checklist may help.

Where does a host independent engagement layer fit?

Some universities run more than one platform, or want the same engagement tools across Panopto, YouTube and other sources. That is where a layer such as Annoto fits. Annoto says it overlays the Panopto player in place, so recordings stay where they are, and its YuJa comparison describes running on top of YuJa in the same way. It installs in Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard and Brightspace over LTI, and its any video host page lists Kaltura, YouTube, Vimeo, Brightcove and others.

What it adds: in video quizzes with gradebook sync, discussion anchored to a timestamp, polls, private notes, video assignments with peer review, and per learner analytics with CSV, xAPI and API export that cover every host in one place. Annoto does not do classroom capture or scheduled recording, so it complements rather than replaces either platform. If you use only Panopto or only YuJa and their native quizzes and analytics meet your needs, you may not need a separate layer. It is most useful when content is spread across hosts or when you want to keep courses stable through a platform change, as covered in switching video platforms without breaking courses.

Annoto is licensed as a flat annual institution license per FTE, with department or program licenses, a free one semester pilot with no contract, and switching credit for time left on a competitor contract.

How do you choose between Panopto and YuJa?

  • Lean toward Panopto if deep search, detailed viewing analytics and a documented accessibility program are top priorities.
  • Lean toward YuJa if you want vendor supplied capture appliances, a wide quiz toolkit with branching and proctoring, and room to negotiate through its price match offer.
  • Run a pilot with real courses, real rooms and your LMS before signing, and check gradebook sync with your own grading setup.
  • Add an engagement layer only if you need consistent interaction and analytics across several hosts.

Key takeaways

  • Panopto and YuJa cover the same core: lecture capture, cloud hosting, quizzes, captions, analytics and LMS integration.
  • Panopto stands out for search, analytics detail and accessibility documentation.
  • YuJa stands out for its own capture hardware, a broad quiz feature set and a published price match offer.
  • Neither vendor publishes prices; both quote per institution.
  • A host independent layer like Annoto adds engagement on top of either, but is optional when one platform's native tools are enough.
