What it is

What is an interactive video quiz on Canvas?

An interactive video quiz in Canvas is a set of questions pinned to timestamps on a video inside a Canvas module or assignment. Playback pauses at each one, the student answers, sees feedback and continues. Annoto adds the quiz through a standard LTI 1.3 tool your admin installs once, so there is no plugin to maintain and no separate account for anyone to create.

The video can run through Canvas Studio, Kaltura, Panopto, YouTube, Vimeo or any embedded player, and the quiz layer appears in the same place with the same controls. Instructors write questions in the player or let Lumo, Annoto's AI copilot, draft them. Multiple choice, multiple answer, true/false, fill in the blank and open-ended questions all work. The full authoring flow is on the in-video quizzes page.

How it works

From Canvas video to graded quiz in three steps

1

Install once via LTI 1.3

Your Canvas admin adds Annoto as an LTI 1.3 tool, in a test or beta environment first if you prefer, then enables it per subaccount. Sign-on, roster and sections come along automatically, and an older LTI 1.1 placement can keep working while you migrate.

2

Add questions on the timeline

Open the video in a module or assignment, pause at the moment a concept has just been explained and drop a question, or review Lumo's draft. Choose pop-up or docked layout, graded or practice mode, then preview and publish.

3

Scores pass to the Canvas gradebook

Quiz scores and completion pass back through LTI Advantage grade services, so a graded video shows up in the gradebook like any other assignment. The Reliable Grade Sync System confirms each write.

What you can do

A full assessment workflow inside the Canvas course

Authoring, layout, feedback, reuse and grade sync are all built into the player your learners already use. No separate quiz builder, no export step.

?

Every question type

Multiple choice, multiple answer, true/false, fill in the blank and open-ended. Each question can carry points, feedback, retries, a time limit and shuffled answers.

Pop-up or docked

Interrupt playback with a pop-up for a must-answer checkpoint, or dock the question beside the side panel so learners keep watching while they respond.

Instant feedback

Learners see whether they were right the moment they answer, with the instructor's explanation while the context is still on screen.

▮▮

Fast-forward lock

Require an answer before playback continues, so the key moments are never skipped at double speed.

Edit after publishing

Versioning lets you fix a question after it is live. Changes sync automatically, with no re-upload.

Reuse across courses

Copy a quiz from one course to another, including Blueprint copies, so an assessment built once scales across sections and terms.

Canvas specifics

How the quiz behaves inside a Canvas course

Where does a quiz video sit in a Canvas course?

As ungraded content in a module, or as a graded assignment when participation should count. Because completion reports back to Canvas, module requirements and prerequisites work as expected: a course can require finishing the week's lecture, quiz included, before the next module unlocks.

What does the Canvas admin configure?

One LTI 1.3 installation. Most administrators complete it in a single sitting, run one sandbox course through embedding a video, taking a quiz and checking the grade column, then enable the tool for a pilot subaccount and widen at term boundaries. Annoto supports LTI 1.1 and 1.3, so the upgrade happens on the admin's schedule.

How do scores reach the gradebook?

Through standard LTI Advantage grade pass-back, with no CSV export and no manual re-entry. The grade a student earns in the video is the grade in the gradebook column for that activity. Completion can carry a grade of its own in Canvas, which is how many programs award participation credit for video work. Practice-mode quizzes stay out of the gradebook.

Does it work with Canvas Studio?

Yes. Annoto sits on top of the player rather than replacing it, so Canvas Studio, Kaltura, Panopto, YouTube and Vimeo embeds all carry the same quiz layer. If you are weighing Studio's built-in quizzing against Annoto, the Annoto vs Canvas Studio page walks through the difference.

Lumo AI Copilot

Lumo drafts the quiz, you decide what stays

Lumo watches the course video and drafts questions at every level of Bloom's taxonomy, from quick recall to create-level tasks. You review, edit and publish. A back catalogue becomes assessable in an afternoon rather than a semester.

Results you can act on

Know exactly how learners performed

Every answer feeds a live assessment view for each learner and for the whole cohort, and the Reliable Grade Sync System pushes scores to the gradebook and verifies each write.

  • Per learner: score, completion, correct-answer rate, time on each question, every answer given
  • Per cohort: completion, grade distribution, the items most of the group missed
  • Export by CSV or pull through the API for institutional reporting

Questions

Interactive video quizzes on Canvas, answered

Do quiz scores reach the gradebook automatically from Canvas?
Yes. Annoto runs in Canvas as an LTI 1.3 tool and passes quiz scores and completion back through LTI Advantage grade services into the Canvas gradebook, verified by the Reliable Grade Sync System. There is no CSV export and no manual re-entry, and practice-mode quizzes stay out of the gradebook.
Can Annoto write the questions for me?
Yes. Lumo, Annoto's AI copilot, watches the course video and drafts questions across every level of Bloom's taxonomy in minutes. You review, edit and publish. Auto-generated questions use the same formats as hand-written ones, so they are graded and passed back the same way.
Can I stop students from skipping ahead?
Yes. You can restrict fast-forwarding until learners complete the optional or mandatory questions, so they cannot skip past the checkpoints that matter. Use it for must-know material and leave it off elsewhere.
Do we have to move our videos out of Canvas?
No. Annoto sits on top of the player you already use in Canvas, whether that is Canvas Studio, Kaltura, Panopto, YouTube or Vimeo. Nothing is re-uploaded or migrated, and media teams keep their existing workflows.
Are the quizzes accessible and is the data protected?
In-video quizzes are built to be fully accessible to all learners, and the interface meets WCAG 2.1 AA. Annoto is ISO/IEC 27001 certified and supports FERPA, GDPR and DPA obligations, so the security review is usually a document exchange rather than a rebuild.
How long does a rollout take?
A pilot course is usually live within days because nothing migrates. Enable the integration, pick one course and one recording, add a handful of questions, and look at the results after two weeks. Questions survive across terms once written, so the effort compounds.
