Kaltura Video Quiz Limitations in 2026: What Instructors Should Know

Kaltura's video quiz (often called IVQ) supports four question types, lets admins turn on multiple attempts, and sends scores to the LMS gradebook, but its own knowledge base documents real limits: multiple choice tops out at four options with one correct answer, a submitted quiz can only be changed by saving a copy, retakes depend on an admin setting, and grades sync only when the quiz is launched as an LMS assignment and the session has not expired. This guide walks through each limit as Kaltura documents it, credits what the tool does well, and shows when a native quiz is enough.

Everything below comes from knowledge.kaltura.com unless labeled as a university IT page, used only as a supplementary source. Module settings vary by institution, so confirm details with your media team.

What does Kaltura's video quiz do well?

Credit first. Kaltura's introduction to the video quiz lists multiple choice, true or false, open ended questions and reflection points, which is a wider mix than many native players offer. The quiz settings article lets you choose whether viewers can skip questions, change answers before submitting, see scores, and review correct answers with your rationale. A No seeking forward option stops viewers from jumping past the part they have not watched, and you can offer a downloadable PDF of the questions as a pre test.

When multiple attempts are enabled, you also pick which score counts: highest, lowest, latest, first, or the average. The quiz analytics article describes per question responses, a per user attempt list, CSV exports of all attempts or the last attempt, and a gradebook report with a Success or Error status for each sync.

Which question types are supported, and what are the limits?

According to Kaltura's guide to adding questions to a video quiz:

  • Multiple choice allows one correct answer and up to four options. The article points you to a Kaltura representative if you need more than four.
  • True or false has two fixed options, and True stays the correct answer unless you change it.
  • Open ended questions are capped at 400 characters for the question and 250 for the answer. They are not graded automatically, so the quiz owner reviews and scores each one. They also require the QuestionsV3 setting in the Quiz module.
  • Reflection points pause playback with a prompt; the article does not say whether they are scored.

There is no multiple answer (select all that apply) or fill in the blank type in the documented list.

Can you edit a Kaltura quiz after students submit it?

No, not the original. Kaltura's introduction says quizzes that have not been submitted can still be edited, but once a submission exists only Save a Copy is available. The copy a quiz article adds three details: only the owner or a co editor can make the copy, the copy is a new media entry with its own title, and YouTube based quizzes cannot be copied at all. In practice, fixing a typo after the first submission means a new entry and two sets of results.

How do retakes and attempts work?

Multiple attempts are off unless your administrator has enabled QuestionsV3 in the Quiz module, per the settings article. Once on, the minimum is two attempts. Kaltura's student guide to taking a quiz notes that students cannot see their previous answers when they retake, and cannot retake once attempts run out. The analytics article shows that the quiz owner can delete a user's attempts from the Quiz Users tab.

When do Kaltura quiz grades sync to the LMS gradebook?

Kaltura documents several conditions. The Ltigrading module article says quizzes must be launched as assignments from the LMS assignment or assessment area, with the assignment properly configured for LTI. A quiz embedded in a regular course page or module sends no score. The Ltigrading and Hosted modules must both be enabled, and scores are sent when the student submits.

Timing matters too. Kaltura's introduction warns that if a quiz is left open for hours or days, "the browser session may expire and grades may not sync." It advises students to finish in one sitting and avoid switching browsers or devices. The student guide says the session timeout is set by your administrator with a one hour minimum. As a supplementary source, a Penn State IT notice from January 2023 (university IT page, not Kaltura) advised instructors to avoid the graded quiz in Canvas for high stakes work because of a known sync issue at the time. Our guide to gradebook sync covers what to test before relying on any tool's passback, and the LTI 1.3 glossary entry explains the standard underneath it.

What should you know about reporting?

Quiz analytics require the Userreports module, per the analytics article. Anonymous quiz takers are grouped into one user named anonymous, exported submission dates are in GMT, and the attempts list loads up to 500 at a time. The article does not state how quickly data refreshes, so ask your Kaltura admin if you need same day reporting.

What about mobile, downloads and accessibility?

The Kaltura articles we reviewed do not describe mobile app behavior for quizzes, so treat that as something to test on your own instance. The only download documented is the optional pre test PDF of questions and answers.

On accessibility, the student guide documents keyboard navigation: Tab and Shift plus Tab to move, arrow keys to choose answers. Kaltura's player accessibility page says the v7 player was tested with JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver, though it does not address quizzes specifically. If accessibility review is part of your process, ask Kaltura for quiz specific conformance details.

Are there other documented constraints?

  • The quiz runs on the v7 player; Kaltura's introduction points v2 users to its upgrade guide.
  • A video cannot include both a quiz and hotspots at the same time.
  • Quizzes can be built from video, audio and YouTube entries, but not from live or image entries, per the create a video quiz article.
  • YouTube based quizzes do not support cue points, slides or chapters.

When is the native Kaltura quiz enough?

If your questions are multiple choice, true or false, or short open responses, you can finalize the quiz before students start, and your LMS assignment is set up the way Kaltura describes, the native quiz does the job well and keeps everything inside the platform your institution already supports.

It gets harder when you need to correct questions mid term, use multiple answer or fill in the blank items, or quiz on video outside Kaltura. Our post on Canvas Studio quiz limitations walks through the same trade offs for Instructure's tool.

Where does Annoto fit?

Annoto runs as a player plugin on Kaltura, so quizzes appear on existing Kaltura entries in MediaSpace and KAF courses without moving the video. Annoto can also host video itself, and it works over Panopto, YouTube, Vimeo and other hosts through a single LTI 1.3 install in your LMS. Its in video quizzes include multiple choice, multiple answer, true or false, fill in the blank and open ended questions, and can be edited after publishing with versioning. Scores pass back through LTI 1.3 to Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard and Brightspace via its gradebook sync. It is an extra tool to license and support, so it makes sense only if the limits above affect your courses.

Key takeaways

  • Kaltura's quiz offers four question types, flexible attempt scoring, no seeking forward, and CSV analytics.
  • Multiple choice is capped at four options with one correct answer, and open ended answers are graded by hand.
  • After the first submission, changes require Save a Copy, which creates a new entry.
  • Grades sync only for quizzes launched as LMS assignments, and an expired session can block the sync.
  • Mobile behavior and quiz specific accessibility are not documented in the articles reviewed, so test them.

Frequently asked questions

Can students retake a Kaltura video quiz?

Yes, if your admin has enabled QuestionsV3 and you turn on multiple attempts. You then choose which score counts, and students cannot see previous answers on a retake.

Why didn't a Kaltura quiz grade reach my gradebook?

Kaltura lists the usual causes: the quiz was not launched from an LMS assignment, the required modules are off, or the session expired before submission. Check the gradebook report's Status column for errors.

Can I fix a question after students have taken the quiz?

Only by saving a copy, which becomes a new entry. The original cannot be saved once submitted.

Does Kaltura support fill in the blank questions?

Not in the documented question types, which are multiple choice, true or false, open ended and reflection points.

If you are weighing the native quiz against an engagement layer, our Annoto vs Kaltura comparison sets out what each covers, and the Kaltura quiz integration page shows how Annoto quizzes run on existing Kaltura video. If Kaltura's own quiz already fits your courses, staying with it is a reasonable choice.
