Blackboard's own Video Studio lets instructors and students record or upload video, but its documentation does not describe in video quizzes, so most institutions add video quizzes to Blackboard Learn Ultra through Kaltura, Panopto, YuJa, PlayPosit, Edpuzzle or Annoto, each connected as an LTI tool that sends scores to the Blackboard gradebook. The right choice depends on where your videos already live, which LTI version the tool uses, and how grades sync.
Anthology's help page for Video Studio describes a tool to record or upload audio and video, with caption and transcript editing. Instructors can create Video Studio content in Course Content, Documents, Forms, Journals and Announcements, and both students and instructors can record in discussions and in feedback on tests and assignments. Anthology notes that Video Studio requires a separate license from the Blackboard LMS license, although announcements and feedback do not need it.
The page does not mention questions inside a video or a quiz score tied to playback. For a simple recorded explanation or a student video reply, Video Studio may be all you need. For graded checks at specific moments in a video, you will need one of the tools below.
Every option below reaches Blackboard as an LTI tool, so it helps to know how LTI 1.3 registration works there. According to Anthology's registration and deployment guide, the vendor registers its tool once in the Anthology Developer Portal and receives a Client ID. Your administrator enters that Client ID in the Admin Panel, and Learn pulls the remaining launch details from the portal. The admin then shares the generated Deployment ID with the vendor. Placements, such as where a link appears in a course, are registered by the vendor, and tools can support Deep Linking so instructors pick content from inside the tool.
If a tool is moving from LTI 1.1, Anthology's migration guide is worth reading. It says the migration cannot be rolled back, that deleting and recreating a tool breaks existing links, and that grades for submissions made before migration may not pass back automatically. It also notes that 1EdTech has deprecated LTI 1.1 and that Blackboard strongly recommends moving to LTI 1.3. Plan migrations outside active grading periods.
Kaltura Video Quiz supports multiple choice, true or false, open ended questions and reflection points, with settings for skipping, hints and retakes. Kaltura's Blackboard gradebook article says the quiz must be added through the Content Market, not Add Content, so that a gradebook column is created, and that the score is sent to that column when a student submits. Kaltura also advises students to finish in one sitting so the session does not expire before the grade syncs. The article uses Grade Center terminology, so confirm the Ultra steps with your Kaltura contact.
Panopto's Blackboard integration page says its in video quizzes can be used as Blackboard assessments, with scores passing to the Blackboard gradebook when the integration is configured. The integration is built on LTI 1.3 with single sign on, supports both Ultra and Original course views, and Panopto describes the older Building Block method as deprecated. Its quizzing page adds that playback pauses at each question and results feed an analytics dashboard.
YuJa's in video quizzing supports multiple choice, true or false, short answer, multiple select, reflective pause and conditional response questions. YuJa says quiz scores sync to the gradebook in Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle and Brightspace through IMS certified LTI 1.3 and native integrations, and that grade edits made in YuJa appear in the LMS. In a Blackboard SaaS course, its setup article adds the platform through Books and Tools by choosing YuJa LTI. If you are deciding between these two lecture capture platforms, see our Panopto vs YuJa comparison.
PlayPosit, which WeVideo acquired in 2022, builds interactive lessons called bulbs. Its Blackboard Ultra guide adds bulbs from the Content Market as self paced or live broadcast lessons, with rosters syncing automatically. Auto graded questions (multiple choice, check all that apply and fill in the blank) sync to the gradebook when a bulb ends; free response grades and score changes need a manual sync from the Monitor page, and assignments added through the rich text editor do not sync. PlayPosit's LTI 1.3 install page lists Blackboard Ultra and says LMS integrations are included for institutional licenses.
Edpuzzle's Blackboard help article covers Original and Ultra. An IT admin registers Edpuzzle as an LTI 1.1 provider with a consumer key and shared secret, then creates a course content placement that supports grading. Grades sync automatically once the teacher checks "Create gradebook entry for this item." Edpuzzle is quick for one teacher to adopt; if you are looking at the wider field, our Edpuzzle alternatives guide covers more options.
Annoto connects to Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle and Brightspace through LTI 1.3 and passes quiz scores to the gradebook through LTI grade services, as described on its in video quizzes page. It runs as a layer over the video you already have, including Kaltura, Panopto, YouTube, Vimeo and other hosts, and Annoto can also host the video itself. Quiz types include multiple choice, multiple answer, true or false, fill in the blank and open ended, with practice mode quizzes kept out of the gradebook. Beyond quizzes, it adds time stamped discussion, private notes, video assignments with peer review and per student analytics.
A platform quiz tool is often enough. If all your video is in Kaltura, Panopto or YuJa and instructors only need knowledge checks, start there. Annoto makes more sense when courses mix hosts, when you want students discussing and reviewing each other on the timeline, or when you want one setup across more than one LMS. The pricing page describes institution and department licenses and a free one semester pilot with no contract.
Our gradebook sync guide and LTI 1.3 procurement checklist cover these checks in more detail.
Anthology's Video Studio page covers recording, uploading and captions but does not describe questions inside a video. Most institutions use an LTI tool for graded video quizzes.
The vendor gives your administrator a Client ID, which is entered in the Admin Panel. The admin then shares the Deployment ID back with the vendor.
Kaltura says the quiz must be added through the Content Market so a gradebook column is created, and students should finish in one sitting so the session does not expire.
Edpuzzle's Blackboard help article describes an LTI 1.1 provider setup with a consumer key and shared secret.
If you are comparing Annoto with a specific vendor, our pages on Annoto vs Kaltura, Annoto vs Panopto, Annoto vs YuJa and Annoto vs Edpuzzle lay out where each tool is strongest and where a native option is enough.
