Panopto quizzes let you pause a recording at any timestamp and pass scores to the LMS gradebook, but the limits that matter in 2026 are documented conditions rather than missing basics: there is no open ended question type, a retake replaces the earlier score, and university IT teams report that scores reach Canvas only when students open the recording from the assignment, often hours later. This guide sets out what Panopto documents, what university IT teams report as a second source, and when the native quiz is all you need.
A note on sources. Panopto's own pages and Panopto staff replies in the official Panopto Community are cited as Panopto. Where we cite university IT guides, they are labeled as supplementary and most of them link back to Panopto's help center. Panopto updates often, so confirm current behavior with your Panopto admin.
Panopto's interactivity page describes quizzes and knowledge checks placed at any timestamp, with playback pausing automatically at each one. Results pass into the LMS gradebook through Panopto's LMS integrations and also feed its analytics dashboard, so instructors see cohort level results without collecting data by hand. Because the quiz lives on the recording itself, it travels with the video wherever Panopto is embedded.
The quiz settings are practical too. The University at Buffalo's Panopto quiz guide (university IT page, supplementary) lists options to allow retakes, show the grade, allow review of correct answers and explanations, and block viewers from advancing until they answer. Per recording seek settings can also disable forward seeking and variable playback speed. For a lecture with a few comprehension checks, that covers a lot.
The Buffalo guide (supplementary) lists four types: true or false, multiple choice, multiple select, and fill in the blank. It also notes that images and equation editors cannot be used in questions, which matters in math, science and language courses.
Open ended questions are not available. In the Panopto Community thread requesting an open ended quiz type, a Panopto administrator wrote in 2021 that the idea was being considered but was "not on our short term roadmap." In November 2025 another Panopto administrator said the request had been filed with the team for future consideration. If written responses or reflection prompts are central to your design, plan for that gap.
Retakes are a per quiz setting. The Buffalo guide (supplementary) explains that when retakes are off, students who rewatch can move past the quiz but cannot answer again. When retakes are on, Saint Louis University's known issues article (university IT page, supplementary, updated November 2025) reports that only the most recent score is kept and sent to Canvas, so a student's grade can drop on a second attempt. It also reports that students keep getting quiz prompts after scoring full marks, and that instructors cannot turn prompts off while reviewing their own recording.
There is no documented option to keep the highest attempt. If you want students to practice freely without risking their grade, that is a design constraint to plan around.
Panopto states on its interactivity page that quiz scores pass to the gradebook through its LMS integrations. The conditions sit in the details. The Saint Louis University article (supplementary) lists these for Canvas:
Instructors have also posted Panopto Community requests, such as one from 2024 to sync quiz results to Canvas more directly, which the forum marks as tracking. If a deadline depends on the gradebook, tell students to launch from the assignment and give the sync time before you grade. Our gradebook sync guide covers what to test before relying on passback, and the LTI 1.3 glossary entry explains the standard underneath it.
Panopto's analytics dashboard collects quiz results alongside viewing data, and its Knowledge Insights add on combines them with completion and viewing behavior. One gap is documented by Panopto staff: in a 2023 Community thread, a Panopto team member confirmed that typed fill in the blank answers are not easy to see in the Quiz Results tab and are available in the downloadable report instead. For language courses where capitalization or spelling decides the grade, plan to review the export.
SLU (supplementary) also notes that a manual CSV export captures scores only at the moment you download it and does not update with later attempts.
Quizzes appear only in the Panopto web or embedded viewer. The Buffalo guide (supplementary) says downloaded videos play straight through without quizzes, and SLU (supplementary) says the Panopto app does not report scores. Students who watch offline or in the app will miss graded questions.
We did not find quiz specific accessibility documentation on Panopto's public pages. Panopto's August 2026 release notes include general accessibility fixes, but if your review process needs quiz level detail, ask Panopto directly.
Another limit from the Buffalo guide (supplementary): quizzes cannot be hidden in the table of contents, so students can skip ahead unless you enable the block advancing option.
If your checks are multiple choice, multiple select, true or false or short fill in the blank, students reliably launch from your LMS assignment, and a delay of a few hours before scores appear is acceptable, Panopto's quiz is a sensible default. It needs no extra tool and stays inside the platform your institution already supports. Our comparison of Panopto vs YuJa covers the wider platform picture.
It becomes harder when you need open ended answers, want the best attempt to count, need scores to show quickly, or want the same quiz workflow on video that is not in Panopto. Those are the cases where an engagement layer can help without changing platforms. Our post on how to know if students watched the video covers the wider measurement question.
Annoto runs inside the embedded Panopto player, so quizzes sit on existing Panopto recordings without uploading them again, and Panopto stays the system of record. Annoto can also host video itself and works over Kaltura, YouTube, Vimeo and other hosts through a single LTI 1.3 install in your LMS. Its in video quizzes include multiple choice, multiple answer, true or false, fill in the blank and open ended questions, can be edited after publishing with versioning, and can run in graded or practice mode. Scores pass back to Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard and Brightspace through its gradebook sync, which verifies each write. It is one more tool to license and support, so it is worth it only if the limits above affect your courses.
Yes, if you enable retakes on each quiz. The most recent attempt is the score that counts, so a retake can lower a grade.
The most common causes are that the student opened the recording outside the Canvas assignment or in the Panopto app, the recording is not restricted to registered users, or the sync window has not passed yet.
No. Panopto staff have said in its Community that the request is filed for future consideration.
No. Downloaded videos play without quizzes, so students need the web or embedded viewer.
If you are weighing the native quiz against an engagement layer, our Annoto vs Panopto comparison sets out what each covers, and the Panopto quiz integration page shows how Annoto quizzes run on existing Panopto recordings. If Panopto's own quiz fits your courses, staying with it is a reasonable choice.
